Kenyan Floriculture on the Path to IFTEX 2026: Record Performance and Bio-Innovations from Complex Food Agro

Discover the key highlights from the IFTEX 2026 media briefing, sustainability trends, and the innovative biological solutions Complex Food Agro Limited will showcase at this year's premier international exhibition.

On the eve of the highly anticipated International Flower Trade Exhibition (IFTEX 2026) in Nairobi, an official media briefing was held at the Jacaranda Hotel. The event brought together key industry stakeholders, including government representatives, regulatory bodies, exporters, growers, logistics companies, and industry associations. The primary discussions focused on the industry's current economic standing, phytosanitary controls, sustainability strategies, and preparations for the year's leading trade event.

Record Performance and Economic Foundation

The floriculture and ornamental plants sector remains a pillar of the Kenyan economy and a vital source of foreign exchange. During the briefing, the Kenya Flower Council (KFC) and the Horticultural Crops Directorate (AFA-HCD) shared impressive statistics:

  • KES 143.78 billion: Total export value of Kenya's horticultural produce at the end of 2025.
  • 62% of all horticultural export earnings are generated specifically by flowers.
  • Approximately KES 110 billion was contributed to the national treasury by the flower industry alone.
  • More than 100 countries regularly purchase Kenyan flowers.
  • The sector provides over 200,000 direct jobs and supports the livelihoods of more than 1 million people across the value chain.

Sustainability as a Global Standard

The modern global market demands more than just beautiful flowers; it requires eco-friendly and ethical production. The Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (F.O.S.S.), championed by the Kenya Flower Council, has achieved international recognition. A key achievement for Kenyan growers has been the widespread adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems, currently utilized by over 92% of member farms. This initiative involves a significant reduction in chemical usage in favor of biological protection methods, water optimization, climate-smart farming practices, and the use of renewable energy.

Phytosanitary Control and Biosecurity

Representatives from the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) emphasized that strict adherence to international standards is the only way to maintain Kenya's competitiveness in European, Asian, Australian, and Middle Eastern markets. To expedite procedures, KEPHIS is actively implementing automated phytosanitary certification and exchanging electronic certificates with international partners. Particular focus is placed on combating quarantine pests, specifically the False Codling Moth (FCM), which requires growers to enhance monitoring and apply robust protective measures.

Current Industry Challenges

Despite the positive momentum, market participants expressed concern regarding several restrictive factors, including:

  • Rising international air freight costs and delays in export logistics.
  • Geopolitical tensions disrupting supply chains.
  • Increased prices for imported fertilizers and other essential farm inputs.
  • Delays in government VAT refunds, exceeding KES 10 billion.

To address these issues, the private sector and government have outlined a coordinated action plan, including tax relief on inputs, a reduction in statutory levies for exporters, and expanded investment in compliance infrastructure.
